Hadley Green

What is now the High Barnet branch of the Northern Line of the London Underground system was originally the High Barnet branch of the Great Northern Railway! Leaving the main line at Finsbury Park, the line travelled in a north-westerly direction, passing through Stroud Green, Crouch End, Highgate and East Finchley before reaching Finchley Church End, now Finchley Central, where the branch then headed north to terminate at High Barnet itself.

The original intention was to continue the line as far as Potters Bar where it would rejoin the main line, thus providing a useful loop line out of the capital. We have made two assumptions, first that the line was actually completed and an additional station was provided at Hadley Green, and secondly that the line did not subsequently become part of the 'tube' network and so became part of the eastern region upon nationalisation.
